Spring is in the Air!

LDV Winery
The vineyard is starting to awaken as the days are getting longer and warmer. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we don’t experience a late frost.

Curt discusses in Curt in the Dirt what we are doing to prepare for planting and the 2014 growing season and check out his Winery Update about potential upcoming wines.
We are thrilled to have our 2011 The Signature Petite Sirah poured at the James Beard House in New York City where Joshua Hebert, owner/chef of Posh in Scottsdale is cooking an amazing dinner.

Chef Hebert is pairing our Petite Sirah with a Kangaroo Chop with Brown Sugar – Hop Shock IPA Demi-Glace and Miniature Pita Pockets. Make your reservations for the Scottsdale preview dinner at Posh Friday, April 4 at 480-663-7674. For more information and to view the entire menu for the April 7th dinner in New York visit http://www.jamesbeard.org/events/art-american-omakase.

The Signature has only been released for about a month and it is getting rave reviews. It has been served twice at winemaker dinners where it paired beautifully with different lamb dishes. It is available for sale along with our other wines by calling us directly, ordering online, at your favorite restaurant, or buying it at an AJ’s store near you. We are starting a “Buy Local Arizona Wine” revolution so keep asking for Lawrence Dunham or Arizona wines at your favorite local restaurants or retailers; particularly if you don’t see them on their list.

Our website’s home page has been updated and we hope everything you need is a click away. Check it out and provide us some feedback. Also, LDV’s April blog called Breaking Bread with the Winemaker – is now posted on the website at this link.

Spring and early summer is our time to reconnect with new and valued customers at events and festivals before things get crazy at the winery. We will be pouring wines at many events throughout the state. Check the events calendar regularly and come see us or plan a visit to the vineyard.

Lastly, we have wonderful wine gift baskets and packages that include Arizona products available for your gift giving year round. It is a great way to celebrate local products and promote Arizona wine. Think of our wines for Mother’s Day, Easter or other holidays or your client and hostess gifts this year. During the holidays, our wines made great client gifts to many of the law offices around town.

We truly appreciate your support.

Winery Update

The first months of 2014 were dedicated to racking all of our 2012 and 2013 wines.

Racking is how we clean up the wines by pumping off the clear juice and leaving the sediment behind. After cleaning the tank or barrel, the wine goes right back in to continue the aging process.
LDV Winery

In addition to the benefits of cleaning up (clarifying) the wines, we have found our mountain fruit likes to get a breath of our clean, fresh air every few months. We also bottled our 2011 The Signature Petite Sirah and 2012 Viognier.

---------- LDV Wine Barrel Room – Wine Aging

It is exciting to go into the barrel room and see how much more wine we have to work with than ever before.

As a winemaker, I have a lot more options to be creative! We are looking forward to assembling some 2012 reds and 2013 whites over the next few months.
Contemplating the possibilities for our 2013 Sky Island Viognier, 2012 Grenaches, and our first estate grown 2012 Syrah is next on the agenda. And for you 2009 R.E.D. red blend fans, we are experimenting with a 2012 Grenache-Syrah-Petite Sirah blend. This is getting fun!

We have also just installed a state-of-the-art, wireless, cellular-based security system in the winery. It will help me sleep better at night. There is enough stuff to keep me awake as it is! Purchase the new releases online at this link or order your wines directly by contacting us at info@ldvwinery.com.

Curt in the Dirt – The Vineyard Update

LDV Winery
----------------------- Viognier Buds

Bud break is about two weeks earlier than normal this year due to our mild and dry winter. We usually have about three weeks to sweat out a late frost but this year it will be more like five. Break out the Tums! Frost damages the tender shoots and can greatly reduce yields or completely eliminate the year’s crop. I will be checking the long range forecasts and computer models several times per day until May.

We irrigated more this winter than ever before. We think with our terroir, we need to keep the soil more moist year round to ensure vigorous growth during the heat and lack of humidity in May and June. This is the period when the canopy develops which shades the grapes, keeps them cooler, and allows us to hang the grapes longer. Hang time relates directly to the development of what Peggy calls our “big ass reds!”.

We are currently clearing the vineyard of winter weeds and beginning our nutrient and soil amendment programs to make sure the plants have food to grow and produce great grapes. We will be adding elements like phosphorus, magnesium, iron, manganese, copper, gypsum, and zinc to the soil to maintain balance and plant nutrition.

We are also preparing to plant about 1,000 new plants that will be filling in skips in the vineyard. The baby grape plants will be arriving in mid-April and planted immediately.
