Cheers to Syrah!
September 1st, 2017
LDV Winery grows four grape varietals and most of our Syrah grapes are in the winery undergoing fermentation. A couple of rows next to the Building Block Petite Sirah, a different clone, were not ready when the rest of the Syrah blocks were, so they are still hanging.

Syrah is in the top 10 of the most widely planted grapes in the world. It was planted in the early 1800’s in the Rhone Valley of France but really took off in the 1960’s. The first California Syrah grapes were planted in the late 1800’s in Napa Valley.

It is a small, dark skinned berry that grows in small, tri-angular- shaped bunches. It is high, but not too high, in acidity and tannins. It loves dry climates and does well in rocky soils that allow for deep root penetration and good water drainage.

LDV’s volcanic, rocky soils and rhyolite granite are a perfect place for Syrah. LDV Syrah produces a highly concentrated wine with beautiful deep dark color.
  LDV Winery Syrah Grapes

Right now, with the Syrah grapes fermenting, the winery smells like a wild blueberry patch with some sirloin steaks on the grill somewhere in the distance.

Syrah is a versatile compliment to many different types of foods. However, if you like grilling or smoking meats, Syrah should be your go-to wine. While a grilled steak is a no-brainer, in our opinion, there is nothing better than a smoked turkey breast with a rich Syrah. When braising or making a rich stew, use Syrah as part of the braising liquid and enjoy as a compliment to the finished dish. But don’t forget Syrah as a great accompaniment to your cheese course. The wine’s richness and depth of flavor is perfect with gorgonzola, aged parmesan, or smoked gouda. Syrah has also been served recently with a LDV Supper Club dessert of a Chocolate Ganache Raspberry Torte.

Here is one of our favorite recipes to enjoy with Syrah, particularly the LDV 2013 Syrah. Recipe Here. The 2013 Syrah is a full-bodied wine, showcasing finesse but with rich intensity. This wine is 88% Syrah (66% in new American oak), 6% Petite Sirah, 6% Grenache in neutral oak. The wine was barrel aged for 30 months and has hints of spice and coconut on the nose that gives way to black fruit flavors with a silky finish. Buy Now.
