Curt in the Dirt - Winery Updates Back to Curt in the Dirt

December, 2015

With a successful harvest under our belt, the vines are going dormant for the short winter. And I finally shaved my playoff beard (hockey fans will get this), harvest is our “playoffs” as winemakers.

We had our first hard frost just before Thanksgiving and the leaves have turned from colorful orange, yellow, red, and green to brown just about overnight.

The leaves will soon drop and show us how much pruning we need to do early next year!

We also completed our fall nutrient program last week as we gave the plants one more shot of fertilizer to stimulate root development and build up the carbohydrates for the winter.

Considering the amount of fruit we harvested – about 60 tons - the vineyard looks in very good shape.

Over the winter and going into spring, we are going to be implementing a more aggressive weed control protocol that we anticipate will cut down on the amount of spraying we will need to do next summer. We are going to be applying a pre-emergent solution that will stop the weeds from coming up instead of having to control them after they have germinated. Stay tuned for how this works!

An update on the orchard, we had our first significant apple harvest this year and we also picked quite a few almonds. We are hoping the cherries and pears kick in next summer! We froze a bunch of apples and will be enjoying LDV apple pies this winter.
