Curt in the Dirt - Winery Updates Back to Curt in the Dirt

December, 2014

We had our first frost in November and the leaves in the vineyard have turned brown and are starting to drop. It has been a fairly mild fall so far but winter is around the corner.

In fact just this past weekend we received our first snow in the Chiricahua Mountains.

After harvest, the plants begin to recover from their fruit production and the time between harvest and when the plants go dormant is very important for root development.

To help this along and prepare the plants for the cold winter ahead, we gave them two shots of fertilizer in late September and early October. We have also implemented our winter watering schedule. Through the years we have increased our irrigation in the winter and feel it is paying dividends by reducing plant mortality and improving overall plant health during the growing season.

In January, we will be doing our soil testing to determine if the vineyard needs any micronutrients and/or soil amendments to prepare for the next growing season. The soil testing consists of identifying content and concentrations of elements and compounds in the soil as well as the pH. Hard to believe that bud break is only 3-4 months away!
