Curt in the Dirt - Winery Updates Back to Curt in the Dirt

October, 2012

We have just completed an amazing 2012 harvest! We finished up September 27th picking the last of the Petite Sirah.

We picked over 12 tons which averages out to about 6 tons per acre – an amazing yield especially for such a young vineyard!

We are literally up to our elbows in deep purple must and have been scrambling to try to find places to not only ferment the grapes but to store the finished wine after pressing.

We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of new barrels and some temporary storage tanks.

We were totally taken by surprise by the volume of fruit we picked from the entire vineyard. To put this year in perspective, we picked a total of 9 tons last year and 2012 yielded over 32 tons.

We feel like we are starting to figure out our spot. Adding nutrients at the right time, revising our irrigation and pruning strategies, and less insect damage all contributed to the bounty. Of course, not having a damaging spring frost didn’t hurt either!

In August it looked like we would be picking everything very early but we had an abrupt end to the monsoon that brought very cool nights that slowed things down. The extra couple of weeks of sunshine and hang time are really going to pay off in some stunningly flavorful and colored wines.
Time will tell if this year was an anomaly or if this terroir is capable of producing like this year after year.

The 2,000 baby Petite Sirah we planted in May got off to a slow start but are finishing very strong. It looks like a two year old vineyard already! We anticipate significant production from this new block next year if we have a normal winter. Keep your fingers crossed. Can never have too much Petite!
