Curt in the Dirt - Winery Updates Back to Curt in the Dirt

September, 2017

LDV Winery
Harvest is well underway! We have harvested the Viognier and most of the Syrah. We hoped to bring in all the Syrah together but the two rows next to the Building Block Petite Sirah were not even close to being ripe.

They are a different clone and would have brought green pepper to the party. The only time I like green pepper is when I am making a mahogany roux for gumbo. So, those grapes are going to hang a bit.
We’ve had zero bunch rot or powdery mildew in the first part of the harvest but we had some damage in the Grenache that we have gone through and dropped.

Grenache is still going to be a bumper crop and so far, has great color. The weather has also begun to cooperate as the monsoon has faded and we are getting perfect finishing weather of 90+-degree days and nights in the high 50’s.

Many of you have heard me talk about one of the keys to great wine grapes being a 30-degree temperature swings between daytime highs and nighttime lows at critical ripening stages. We are on that. Despite the unprecedented heat of mid-summer, we are still optimistic for a superior vintage.
