Curt in the Dirt - Winery Updates Back to Curt in the Dirt

August, 2016

Veraison is well underway about 10 days earlier than usual. Veraison is when the sugar levels start to rise causing the grape to change in color. We typically judge that the grapes will be getting ready to pick about 45 days after veraison is in full swing. The weather continues to be warm with not a lot of monsoon activity yet. This may expedite things. Or if the monsoon picks up, it might slow things down. We will be turning on the audible bird guards this week as the little critters are probably starting to get interested in what we are growing! We do not use netting at LDV. It breaks our heart to have to remove dead birds or animals that get caught in the netting. So we share a little bit of the grapes at the end of the rows with the birds and animals that brave the horrific sounds of the bird guards.

We will begin to monitor sugars, pH, and flavor profiles in the Viognier Block in early August to try to estimate harvest calendar windows. While these are never totally accurate, it gives us a chance to put together our work program to get ready: cleaning tanks, checking equipment, and moving things around in the winery so we have enough room to operate once the fruit arrives.
