Curt in the Dirt - Winery Updates Back to Curt in the Dirt

July, 2016

We just completed the second full pass of vine positioning (feeding the vines through the positioning wires) and the vineyard is looking good. Last year we had to drop a bunch of fruit at this point as the crop load was too heavy but this year things are just about right.

We had a very moderate spring but in May we stepped up the irrigation in anticipation of paying for it with a hot June, and we were right. We have had 9 days of 100+ degree temperatures after experiencing none the past two growing seasons. The monsoon is now starting to set up and our daytime high temperatures have gone back to the normal low 90’s.

Many of the bunches are starting to close and the berry size (very small) is exceptional so far. Some area vineyards are already experiencing some veraison (grapes coloring) but it looks like we are 3-4 weeks away from that. We are also trying to keep ahead of the weeds. We had a rare 2-inch rain in early June that really got them going and we know more rain is on the way. With a little bit of rain, they grow, well, like weeds!
