Curt in the Dirt - Winery Updates Back to Curt in the Dirt

June, 2018

As mentioned in our eNewsletter for June, 2018, we have had a very windy spring at some inopportune times. The wind impacted the Grenache the most which was a little bit late and has a very delicate flower. Because of 40 mile-per-hour winds for about a week straight, we experienced an event called shatter which either ruins or damages the flowers before they can pollinate properly and become little grapes.

While it looks like the Grenache crop loads have been significantly impacted, this grape always surprises us with the bounty of its yields. Hope another surprise is in store! We have applied the trace elements of copper and phosphorus to the vineyard and are adding our first nitrogen of the season to push along the canopy after the fruit has set. We have also applied a fungicide to help combat bunch rot and mildew as the grapes start to ripen. Grape development appears to be in line with timelines from previous years.
