Curt in the Dirt - Winery Updates Back to Curt in the Dirt

May, 2017

LDV Winery

Breathing a sigh of relief as we have gotten through another bud break without a damaging frost event. Usually by May 1st we are out of the woods but anything can happen in the mountains. Last week it snowed in Texas!

The vineyard is still looking great and we just finished suckering and shoot thinning (getting rid of unwanted vegetation). We applied iron and zinc and the vineyard has flowered and fruit is beginning to set.

We finally identified the location of a menacing underground leak around the water storage tank. It was good to get it fixed before our highest water usage month of June.

It appears the work we did over the winter to clean out the entire irrigation system is paying off.
The water is going out a lot more uniformly and we are not seeing the growth variability resulting from wet and dry spots in the vineyard we have seen in the past. We also watered a lot more in late winter and early spring to try to bring up our water profile so we are not attempting to play catch up as the warmer weather arrives.

The orchard blossomed out nicely. Unfortunately, the cherries flowered and set fruit but dropped it all. They are just too young. We have a bumper crop of almonds set, along with some nice quantities of apples and pears. Should be a tasty late summer/early fall!
