Curt in the Dirt - Winery Updates Back to Curt in the Dirt

March, 2016

Spring has sprung at the estate again early this year. The roses have sent out their first shoots and the almond trees are in full bloom.

These events are precursors to grape bud break but just when that happens, we don’t really know. While we have had record warmth the last few weeks, the nights have been getting down below freezing on occasion which hopefully will keep the vines from pushing out too soon.

We have had some pretty wild temperature swings lately. Last week we had a 77 degree day and in the morning it was 27. That’s a 50 degree swing!

Napa Valley, California is reporting bud break already starting. It is earlier than usual and about 17 to 21 days ahead of normal.

The concern for California vineyards is the heavy rains that are forecasted that could impact the tender shoots. In Arizona we don’t anticipate heavy rains this time of year.

Pruning is just about wrapped up and we are beginning our aggressive water regimen to keep the soil cool and moist to delay bud break and also prepare the plants for the big push when it comes. We will be starting our spring nutrient program very soon.

Our biggest worry right now is a frost after bud break so we are glued to the weather reports to see if any bad stuff is coming our way in the next coming weeks.
