Lawrence Dunham Vineyards’ wines win awards. We submitted three wines to The Arizona Republic/Arizona Wine Growers Association competition and were awarded two medals, a wine of distinction ribbon, and a People’s Choice award.

Our first ever production white, the 2012 Sky Island Viognier, won a Gold Medal for best Viognier, the 2010 Sky Island Grenache won a bronze in the Grenache category.

The Signature 2010 Petite Sirah won a “Wine of Distinction” ribbon. Most importantly it was chosen by participants for “People’s Choice Award” for best overall red wine at the Festival at the Farm that was attended by over 1,000 people.

What better time to pop a celebratory wine than in December. We love champagne and sparkling wines in the true méthode champenoise style. Read about it in LDV’s December blog called So How Are Those Bubbles Created? – now posted on the website. http://www.ldvwinery.com/blog.html

As of December 1st, purchase our wines at AJ’s stores - Central and Camelback (Phoenix), 56th & Ray Road (Chandler), and Frank Lloyd Wright & Thompson Peak Parkway (Scottsdale) locations. Hopefully that list will grow in coming weeks.

LDV Winery Taste our wines at Beckett’s Table, FnB, Posh, Italian Restaurant, Pizzeria Bianco, Bar Bianco, and Quiessence. In Southern Arizona, LDV wines are available at the Ritz Carlton at Dove Mountain, Unplugged Wine Bar (downtown Tucson), and Overland Trout in Sonoita. Keep asking for Arizona wines when you don’t see them at your favorite local restaurants or retailer.

We are rolling out a NEW wine club in 2014 – LDV Sky Islander Wine Club. First shipments are anticipated in February or March. Drop us an email at info@LDVWinery.com if you are interested in joining or learning more.

We have wonderful wine gift baskets available again this year. It is a great way to celebrate local products and promote Arizona wine.

Also we have a great “Stocking Stuffer” promotion – buy 2 Arizona Wine Travel Cards, get one free! $20 each provides you a year of discounts at wineries, destinations, and restaurants throughout Arizona.

Think of us for your client and hostess gifts this year. Contact us to purchase. Most importantly, make sure you have enough wine to get you through all your celebrations. Give us a call or drop us an email with your wine order.

Cruise Down the Rhine River with Us

At a weak moment, Peggy convinced Curt (who detests long plane trips) to headline with Sam Pillsbury for an Arizona’s Winemakers’ Cruise down Germany’s Rhine River November 9-16, 2014. The 7-night cruise aboard the brand-new AMAReina river boat leisurely floats down the Rhine River passing castles and the beautiful countryside from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Basel, Switzerland. The cruise is selling out quickly. If you book by December 30, 2013 you’ll receive $1,500 off per stateroom and in addition also receive $100 per stateroom towards purchase of Lawrence Dunham Vineyards’ wines onboard.

Throughout 2014 we are going to host events to learn all about the wines and wine regions we will travel through on our trip. Our first event is: January 15th at our home in Fountain Hills. Let us know if you would like to attend. To learn more or book your stateroom contact: Hank or Roxanne Boryczki, AZ Trails Travel – (480)837-8665 or Roxanne@arizonatrails.com. To be part of our group, your trip must be booked by AZ Trails Travel to receive all your benefits. A flier with more information is available at this link.

Winery Update

LDV Winery
Dropped fruit due to bunch rot

Harvest this year was the most challenging yet. Bunch rot – two of the most dreaded words in our industry - hit us hard. We had nine straight days of rain (the same system that flooded Colorado visited us first) with very little sun and wind to dry out the grapes. Bunch rot occurs when bacteria in the air meet the warm, moist environment of damp ripe grape clusters.

We usually have techniques we use to mitigate this problem, but this year, just too much rain, too often. Throw in a freak hail storm that damaged the leaf canopy and impacted ripening and you have a rough go.

We literally had to leave tons and tons of fruit on the ground in the vineyard. Heartbreaking, after tending to the vineyard all spring and summer and anticipating a great harvest.

On the bright side, we brought in about the same amount of fruit as 2012. Our Viognier was so prolific we had to sell some of the fruit because we could not handle it all. Never saw that one coming! We picked more Syrah than anticipated but the Petite Sirah and Grenache were most impacted by the bunch rot and yields were down from last year. LDV Winery

Somehow we survived and hopefully the wines will be as strong as the effort was to make them.

A big thanks to all of the “Crush Pad Junkies” as they are fondly called, including Sandi and Daniel Sanchez, Mike Bock, Brooks Bradbury, Mike Shea, Diane and John McNamara, Debra Hodges, and Camille Soto.

Curt in the Dirt - The Vineyard Update

Our vineyard had a difficult year dealing with the hail storm right before harvest, the rains and subsequent bunch rot that occurred, and very high yields.

Fortunately, we had a very unique fall this year as we did not get a freeze until November 25. We also had our first snowfall in the Chiricahuas which is always visually spectacular. Much of the vineyard was still green!

LDV Winery
Vineyard still green well into November

Right after harvest is a very important time for the vines. As soon as the grapes are picked, the plants start to focus on root development and overall recuperation. We usually only have a month or so for this to occur before the first freeze but we had two months this year.

To help things along, post-harvest we injected nitrogen and boron through the irrigation system and topically applied potassium and magnesium. Topical application is spraying these elements directly on the leaves as they are absorbed better this way. These additives should help the vines survive the winter and be ready to go next spring.

Although we have cut back on the amount of irrigation from the growing season, we will continue to water the plants throughout the winter. The next major step in the vineyard will be pruning which will occur in March.
