Spring is in the Air

LDV Winery
It is popcorn season in the vineyard!

Leaves are starting to pop out all over the vineyard. This year the Syrah were the first to pop out. Of course, we are not out of danger yet because frost and cold weather could still appear.

2013 Vintage Begins
We have finished all of the pruning, adding nutrients to the soils, and preparing for replacement planting.

We are thrilled to be celebrating our 5th anniversary this month. Wow what a ride. Read about it in LDV’s April blog called Life Changing Moments which is now posted on the website at this link.

The much anticipated 2012 Viognier is almost ready. Read more about what to expect in the Winery Update. Many of you joined us for barrel wine tastings in March and the comments were all positive. People were buzzing about how the wines tasted in the barrel.

Springtime is festival time. Lawrence Dunham Vineyards will be pouring wines at a lot of upcoming events. See the Upcoming Events we will be attending. We hope to see you at one or all of the events during April and May.

Peggy has begun to write a regular article called Discover AZ Wines in the monthly issue of City Sun Times. The April issue that focuses on the Sonoita/Elgin wine region is available at this link. In the next couple of months the other two major wine regions will be highlighted.

Be on the lookout for LDV’s version of a flash mob call “Spontaneous Consumption.” Rumor has it that Peggy and Curt will be showing up on short notice at some of the valley’s best eateries with specials on LDV wine, amazing food, and lots of wine chit-chat! You will receive a blast e-mail a few days prior to the events so make sure you open it up and see what it’s all about or you’ll miss it!

Lastly, the list is growing where Lawrence Dunham Vineyards’ wines are available. We have finished the paperwork to be a vendor in AJ’s and hope to have our wines available soon in one near you. Taste our wines at Beckett’s Table, FnB, Posh, Italian Restaurant, Pizzeria Bianco, Bar Bianco, Searsucker, and Quiessence as well as the Ritz Carlton at Dove Mountain in the Tucson Area. Keep asking for Arizona wines when you don’t see them at your favorite local restaurants. Buy and drink local wine. We hope to see you soon.

Cheers!

Curt in the Dirt – The Vineyard Update

LDV Winery
Spring Bud Break
Well it’s that time of year again. We have one eye on the vineyard and the other on the Weather Channel. As the buds burst we hope for non-freezing nights.

The Arizona wine industry is just now getting large enough to attract new local vendors and technical expertise. Of note, Vern Johnson a representative for Fertizona, has stepped up to provide assistance to wineries statewide.
He specializes in vineyard maintenance and has worked with me to develop a customized plant nutrient program specifically tailored to our land and vineyard goals. This is a huge development for us. We just completed our pre-bud break procedures that should have the vines jumping!

We are not planting any new acreage this year but we will be planting about 900 vines to fill in the skips resulting from a couple of tough winters. This winter was about average and the vines that are established are looking good.

Winery Update

Now that we have recovered from the massive 2012 harvest, we are learning to deal with the aftermath – a lot of wine to be cared for and nursed along!

It’s a challenge to go from 500 cases to over 1,800 cases in one season but we are getting very organized! Fortunately our crew, facility, and equipment were ready for it.

Our 2012 Sky Island Viognier, which was produced in all stainless steel with no malolactic fermentation, is about ready to bottle.
LDV Winery
Curt Barrel Tasting Viognier
Our 2012 Viognier which has been barrel aged in a combination of neutral Hungarian oak barrels and custom made new French and American oak hybrid barrels needs a little more time and will probably be ready this summer.

We have begun to taste some of the 2012 reds and they are in that awkward phase that always seems to occur six months after barreling. The Grenache is way ahead of the Syrah and Petite Sirah but they all have a long way to go. We aged our 2010 reds for 22 months so these wines are just babies!

The 2011 reds are coming along and should be ready for bottling later this summer with release in the fall.

Perfect Pairings

LDV Winery Lemons, clams, and fresh parsley sitting atop fresh pasta symbolize springtime on a plate. The first time I had this dish - Spaghetti with Fresh Clams, Parsley, and Lemons – we were on a weekend wine tasting trip to Paso Robles, California. We attended the annual Zinfandel Tasting and Auction. That is a whole other story that we can discuss another time.
We stayed at a wonderful seaside village called Cambria and walked to this cozy seafood restaurant that overlooked the ocean. Peggy ordered this dish and was blown away by the fresh flavors. Curt later re-created it and this dish has become a staple when fresh clams are available and lemons are in peak season. Try the dish with homemade pasta. The recipe is available at this link.
