Happy Anniversary to LDV!

LDV Winery
As we welcomed 2013, we celebrated our 5th Anniversary. In fact, we are going to celebrate for months culminating in our birthday party on April 13th at the winery.

We are excited about 2013. Five years ago we never dreamed of being in the wine business and in 2013 we will be releasing our third vintage.

Curt in the Dirt – The Vineyard Update

The vines are getting much needed rest after producing so many grapes during the 2012 harvest. We are getting ready to prune the vineyard.

Pruning is an important part in the grape growing process. Like roses or fruit trees, the vines must be pruned to maintain their health, vigor and fruit quality. Pruning removes most of the vine growth from the previous year. Pruning is the first step in ensuring that each vine has a strong framework for the growing season.

There are many different approaches to pruning depending on the varietal, the yield desired, and cluster quality. The goal is to ensure that we have a vine that produces enough buds that will produce our desired crop. You would think that the more the buds the better the crop. It is true that more buds create more grapes, but that is not necessarily our objective at Lawrence Dunham Vineyards. We try to balance vine vigor with fruit concentration and intensity.

At Lawrence Dunham Vineyards’ we use a single cordon trellis system. We prune the canes (the previous vine growth) off each cordon (or arm) to ensure that there are 10 positions left on the single cordon (on our mature vines) with 3 to 4 buds per position. Each bud will produce one cane and each of the canes will produce 2 grape clusters. This approach is labor intensive but helps us manage fruit yield.

If you would like to join us in the vineyard to prune, give us a call. It is an easy and peaceful way to while away the hours. And we would love the help.

Or if you would like the dried vines for holiday wreaths or other art project, let us know so we can hold some back for you.
